William Brown
William Brown was the eldest son of Thomas and Hannah. His birth date has been given as April 1, 1772. This does not allow for enough time for a viable pregnancy if the birth date of his sister Susanna is correct, but it is what has been listed over the years by many who have attempted to document this family. He would have been born while Thomas and Hannah were living in the Monocacy settlement before Thomas lost the lease for the tract of land. It is interesting that the first son was named William and that the second son was Thomas, Jr., and not the other way around. The speculation that Thomas Brown was the son of a William Brown in the research of Andree W. Wilson-Taylor who descended from a William Browne who arrived on the “Ark” in 1634 might hold some weight because often the eldest son was named for a parent.
In 1798 William Brown married Anna Elizabeth Buhrman, the daughter of Johannes and Katherine Ellen (Martin) Buhrman. They were probably married at Apples Reformed Lutheran Church in Thurmont (then Mechanicstown) because that is where Anna Elizabeth Buhrman was baptized in October of 1806 and also where all of their children were baptized. The children included William, Jr., b. 1800; Mary Ann (Polly), b. 1803; John, b. 1805; Ignatius, b. 1807; Elizabeth, b. 1810; Catherine, b. 1813; Hannah, b. 1816; Susannah, b. 1822; and Matilda, b. 1826.
William was a farmer and at various times also a merchant, tavern keeper, and postmaster. He was very much involved in buying and selling land on the mountain. On April 12, 1800, he paid Richard Winchester $300 for 65¼ acres of “Lemmons Vineyard,” “Worth Something,” and “Biggs Lot.” Several times over the next 15 years he and his brother Ignatius bought and sold parcels of these properties.
In 1826 he signed with his brothers and brothers-in-law a school subscription document to establish a new school on the mountain that would be closer than the one founded in 1821 in Harbaugh’s Valley.
By 1828 he moved to the Brown homestead next to the current site of Brown’s Cemetery. And on September 23, 1835, he conveyed the deed to this property to his nephew George Brown, son of his brother Thomas, Jr., because he was the trustee for his brother’s estate. Thomas, Jr., had migrated to Ohio by then. By deeding the property to his nephew it was kept in the family.
According to A History of the Smithsburg Charge, by Ferdinand Hesse, William Brown, Sr., was instrumental in helping to establish a church for the growing community. From this book (p 81), it was stated that “at a meeting of those interested in a church in the vicinity of Foxville, Frederick County, Maryland, in the year 1829, they ‘Resolved and agreed that subscriptions should be taken for the building of an Evangelical Lutheran and German Reformed Church,’ and the committee included: George P. Fox, William Brown, Sr., Jacob Wyant, Builders. Christian Hauver, Daniel Hauver, Thos. Brown, George Long and Philip Fox, Collectors were George Long, Treasurer; Philip Fox, Secretary.” A general subscription was put forth, and 357 names appear on the subscription list with a total of $751.98 raised for the building. The cornerstone was laid June 1, 1830. The first Church Council was elected in June 1831. “Those elected were: Elders---William Brown, Sr. and George P. Fox. Deacons---Thos. Brown, Abraham Poorman, Christian Gatze [Gates] and Philip Fox. George P. Fox was appointed Secretary and William Brown, Sr., Treasurer” (pp 83-85). For many years both William Brown, Sr., and William Brown, Jr., and their brothers and nephews and cousins and sons-in law served in this church, which was named, “Mt. Moriah,” and was “built of stone and stands as an emblem of faithfulness and devotion of God’s people, many of whom sleep the sleep of death near by the church” (p. 89).
By 1840 William is listed in the U.S. Census in District No. 10 of Frederick County as William Brown, Sr., head of household, age 68, with a family that included one male aged 10 to 15, one male aged 20 to 30, one male, 60 to 70, one female aged 10 to 15, two females 20 to 30, and one female 60 to 70 (Anna would have been 62). William Brown, Jr. is listed below him.
In 1850 he is still in District No. 10 listed as William Brown, Sr., 77, a farmer with $1600 worth of real estate. On the list is his wife Elizabeth and family members Elizabeth, 29; Hannah, 27; Matilda, 22; Josephine, 9, and Elizabeth, 6. The names tally for his daughters although the ages do not, and Josephine and Elizabeth match the two youngest children of his daughter Catherine, who married her first cousin William H. Brown, the son of Thomas and Susannah Rebecca (Harman) Brown, and who had died in 1841. Thus, it looks like they were helping to raise two granddaughters.
William, Jr., married an Elizabeth, listed as Elizabeth Brown in the marriage records, in 1833 in Queen Anne’s County. They had seven children. At some time after 1851 they went to Miami County, Ohio.
The eldest daughter, Mary Ann, married Christian Hauver in 1823. He helped build and was a deacon of Mt. Moriah Church. They had seven children. Peter Hauver married Susanna Maria Fox and his sister Elizabeth Hauver married George Hiram Fox, both children of George Philip Fox, the son of the George Fox who patented “Foxes Range” and who is considered the founder of Foxville. Another Hauver son, John Christian, migrated to Shelby County, Ohio. Other Hauvers were farmers and orchardists.
John Brown, the third child, was a trapper and trader. He married Jennie Delawter. They had 12 children and lived in a log cabin that adjoined the Mt. Moriah Church property. Their youngest child, Josephine, died in her cradle when the cabin burned down in 1858. This was also the year that both John and Jennie died of typhoid fever, which was rampant in the area in the 1850s and 1860s.
The fourth child, Ignatius was a merchant in Cavetown, Maryland, and married Susan Smith and had four children, one of whom, Lewis, ran Brown’s grocery for many years on Mt. Zion Road, near Smithsburg, Maryland. Elizabeth, the fifth child, lived to age 71 and never married. Catherine, the sixth child, as mentioned previously, married her first cousin and had four children. Hannah, the seventh child, remained single, living to 72. Susannah, the next child, died just short of her second birthday. Matilda, the last child of the line, married William Goetz (anglicized to Gates) in 1851 and resided in a two-story log home on Catoctin Hollow Road, just southeast of the Brown homestead. They lost a 14-day-old infant but a second daughter survived.
William Brown died September 13, 1854, and Anna Elizabeth (Buhrman) Brown died February 2, 1861. Both are buried in Brown’s Cemetery along with many members, including very young ones, of this family.
