Ignatius Brown

Ignatius Brown was the youngest son of Thomas and Hannah. He was born on January 11, 1781, in Creagerstown, Maryland, and would have been 9 years old when Hannah moved to the homestead in Round Meadow in Foxville. He may have been a sickly child because oddly he was not baptized with his older brother and younger sister in 1790 at the church in Creagerstown. As an adult, however, he was quite the presence in the burgeoning community.

In April of 1802 he married Elizabeth McAfee in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Maryland. Their names show as “Ignatius Braun --- Elis. M_field” in the church records. She was the daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Powell) McAfee. Her older brother was Archibald McAfee. The McAfees had migrated from Chester County, Pennsylvania, to central Maryland, like the Biggs and Pittinger families. They owned land above the falls on the mountain that for years was referred to as McAfee Falls but in the 1930s was named Cunningham Falls when the National Park Service acquired the land for $1 an acre during the Depression.

In the same year Ignatius was married he enlisted in the militia and was commissioned a lieutenant in 1804. He was instrumental in forming a company of men from Mechanicstown (later renamed Thurmont), Maryland, for service during the War of 1812, although where they served is not known. His rifle has been passed down through the family and is in the possession of a third great grandson.

Notation of rifle company commanded by Ignatius Brown in Maryland Gazette on February 3, 1825

Ignatius Brown’s long rifle, courtesy of Dr. Gary Kenna Brown, a third great grandson, who shared that it was signed by H. Koch, a German gunsmith in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, circa 1810.

Ignatius was quick to realize that there were good and abundant varieties of hardwood trees on the mountain and began to buy land. He owned a tract along Owen’s Creek on the Foxville-Deerfield Road that was adjacent to the Brown homestead and on it he built and operated a water-powered vertical sawmill. This enterprise grew, and he thus became the first large-scale commercial lumberman in the area. As his stature increased, he served the community as constable, notary, and magistrate. He officiated at collector’s sales for payments of debts, which were quite common in the early days when money was scarce or crops failed. When Wolf’s inn became the central location for business to be transacted he would adjudicate cases and notarize documents there.

He and Elizabeth had the following children: Matilda, b. 1804; William B., b. 1806; Jeremiah Daniel, b. 1808; Susannah, b. 1809; Elizabeth, b. 1811; Ignatius G., b. 1812; Thomas A., b. 1815; Mary Ann (1817-1819); Joseph B., b. 1819; Mary Ann (1820-1822); and John M., b. 1823.

Matilda married John E. Harbaugh, Jr. and they had 13 children. The Harbaugh family’s immigrant was a Yost Harbaugh and the Harbaughs were well established in the area between the mountain and Washington County to the west and Franklin County, Pennsylvania to the north that was and still is known as Harbaugh’s Valley.

William B. Brown married Elizabeth Fox and had eight children. He took over his father’s sawmill and operated a store in Foxville. Two of the sons, George Ignatius and Martin Luther, then kept their lumber “empire” going for another generation. Martin Luther Brown served in Company D of the Sixth Maryland Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He lost his Bible during his service and many years later it was found at a thrift shop and returned to his heirs. He has a large flat marker in Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church Cemetery. Many of this family is buried there because William B. Brown was a prominent member of this congregation.

This family held out for a long time but in 1942 Martin Luther Brown’s grandson Victor sold some of the family farm on the Foxville Road to the War Department and it became part of the military training facility there and later the presidential retreat.

Jeremiah Daniel Brown followed the family trade and also was a lumberman. He married Mary Ann Flautt from the Flautt family that had settled near Emmitsburg in the Moravian Graceham Church in 1806. In 1835 at age 27 and after having five children he died suddenly of an unknown cause. A sixth child was born about a month later.  Jeremiah was listed in the estate of his father Ignatius, who died intestate in 1830, so his portion went to his widow and children. At the court hearing Mary Ann testified she was 36 and of weak constitution but perhaps this was the stress of childbirth and widowhood both happening. She never remarried and lived until 1898 and the age of 92.

Their eldest son, George, died at age 20 and is buried in Brown’s Cemetery. The second son, Joseph B., married Diana Buhrman, and was a lumber dealer and school director and county commissioner. Joseph and Diana raised 10 children.

The third son, James Daniel, married Savilla Mary Buhrman and was a carpenter, wagon maker, and storekeeper and operated a fish hatchery, ice house, cider press, and paint mill. They lived on Raven Rock Road near Mt. Zion across the road from his uncle John M. Brown. Savilla died in 1872 at the age of 40 and after bearing 15 children in 20 years. On the 1880 census his mother Mary Ann is listed as living with her son. Perhaps she helped him raise his motherless children. Many of James Daniel’s children headed west to make their fortunes and raise their families with several going to Iowa and Illinois. The youngest, Fannie, stayed home to care for her widowed father until she met Morland Alexander Wolf, who stood up to her father when he did not want his daughter to abandon caring for him. Morland Wolf was also a carpenter. Fannie was self educated but taught school and was also a postmistress and keeper of the family’s “history.” She was the grandmother of both Andree W. Wilson-Taylor and Don Wolf, previous researchers of the Brown lineage.

Jeremiah’s son William had 23 children, 19 of whom survived him. He first married Susannah Berklite, who was a granddaughter of Susannah Brown and Daniel Gordon and thus his second cousin, and they had at least 11 children. When she died in 1870 he married a Catherine (last name unknown) who gave him four children until she died in 1877; and then he married Mary A. Ruth who gave him four more.

Savilla Brown, Jeremiah’s daughter, married George Martin Harbaugh and they lived in Harbaugh’s Valley, near Sabillasville, Maryland. The last child, Jeremiah Upton, was born after his father died in 1836. He married Margaret A. Himes and they raised their family of eight in the area surrounding Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, just north of Foxville.

Ignatius and Elizabeth’s fourth child was Susannah who married David Harbaugh. The next daughter, Elizabeth, married George Gardenhour and they lived in western foothills of the mountain in Smithsburg and their family had orchards that are still in the family today with seasonal fruit stands for apples and peaches. By this time peach orchards were a large industry in Washington County, Maryland. In one newspaper article written in the 1880s there was a notice that someone had recorded over 400,000 peach trees in the county. All the Gardenhours are buried in the Smithsburg Cemetery.

The sixth child of Ignatius is Ignatius G. who married Catherine Schriver. He also was an orchardist and farmer and on the 1880 census he is listed as having $10,600 in real estate.

Thomas A. Brown is the seventh child. He married Catherine Oswald. They had five children. Thomas A. Brown was a prominent member of the Smithsburg, Maryland, community and helped found St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He left a bequest in his will of $25 to be given annually for 50 years as long as the church remained Lutheran (see article on St. Paul’s Church under Mountain Life/Religion). He farmed land on the original Raven Rock Road (now Fruit Tree Drive) that was inherited and farmed by his son Reuben B. Brown. There were several tracts of land in the estate sale (see Mountain Life/Land Sales). Reuben was president of the Smithsburg Bank and for many years a Sunday School superintendent of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Smithsburg. He adopted his brother John B. Brown’s daughter Cora after her mother died. She married and was living with him in 1930. The original properties were sold at auction in 1934 when Reuben died. Thomas’s daughter Elizabeth Hammett married Joseph Henry Sleasman who also farmed and raised peach trees and was the vice president of the Peoples Bank of Smithsburg and an elder of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Elizabeth and Joseph Sleasman’s granddaughter was Rachael Arabella Sleasman Schwartz who authored The Flautt Family in America. Thomas A. Brown had two more sons, Josiah Joseph, who was a graduate of Roanoke College, a schoolteacher, a farmer and a director of the Smithsburg Bank, and John B., a cigarmaker in 1880 and later in 1900 was listed as living with his father Thomas and elder married daughter Ella and her family on the original farm.

The ninth and eleventh children were both named Mary Ann. One was born in 1817 but only lived 2 years and the other was born in 1820 and also only lived 2 years. Both are buried in Brown’s cemetery.

The tenth child was Joseph B. Brown who had a dry goods store in Myersville, Maryland. He married first Mary Daub and had three children and then married second Lenah C. Schildknecht and had four more and married third Virginia (Jennie) Routzahn.

The last child of Ignatius and Elizabeth was John M. Brown. He married Margaret Anne Elizabeth Fox. They had 10 children and lived on a farm on Raven Rock Road between Smithsburg, Maryland, and Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. The house is still standing and the farm is now a winery.

Ignatius died on March 12, 1830, of typhoid fever at age 49. He died intestate and it took a long time to settle the estate. His sons William B. and Joseph were the trustees. At the time of his death he owned more than 400 acres of property which was described in the court document as “Fox Range,” 396+ acres that he had bought in 1811 plus another 36 acres on the northwest side of Owen’s Creek that he bought in 1817. William B. Brown divided the properties into six lots and they were sold with the proceeds split between Elizabeth Brown, her surviving children, and the widow and children of her deceased son Jeremiah Daniel Brown.

Ignatius Brown was buried in Brown’s Cemetery with his infant daughters. In 1850 the widowed Elizabeth is listed as age 69 and living with her son William B. Brown and his family. She died in 1853 and is buried in the family plot next to her husband where a large obelisk now stands.
