Catharine Dorothea Brown

Catharine Dorothea Brown was the youngest of Thomas and Hannah’s family. The family called her Kate. She was born on March 26, 1784, probably while the family was living in the Creagerstown area. She was baptized on April 4, 1790, having just turned 6, in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Creagerstown, along with her 10-year-old brother John Nathan (see baptismal record under Hannah’s Story). The church was established in 1787 with shared congregations of Lutherans and Reformed but the latter eventually died out. In the transcribed baptismal record she is listed as “Catherina,” but in the original baptismal record she is listed as “Dorothee Catharina.” On the baptismal record the parents are listed as “Thomas and Hanna,” and the sponsor is listed as “Hanna, the mother.” This would seem to indicate that Hannah was on her own by this time, because Thomas is believed to have died between 1786 and 1789. It is doubtful Catharine would have remembered much about her father. Around 1791 Hannah moved the family to the cabin known as the Brown farmstead in Round Meadow.

Little is known about Catharine’s early life, but, being the youngest, perhaps she was doted upon and followed all of her siblings down the mountain paths as they visited their many relatives and went from farm to farm. At the age of 23 she married Thomas Caster on January 20, 1807, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Maryland, which was established in 1770 and had a flourishing congregation by this time and is where her older sister Mary Elizabeth (Polly) was married. The marriage record shows as “Thom. Custer and Chath. Brown, Jan. 1807.” In census records and other documents Jacob Thomas Caster goes by Thomas Caster. Whether his full name originally was Jacob Thomas Caster or Thomas Jacob Caster is unclear. A number of Casters in Pennsylvania seem to descend from an immigrant Paulus Kuster, a Mennonite mason, who is listed on the 1693 tax list of Germantown, Pennsylvania. The Casters originally were part of the German migration from the Palatinate and the name is alternately spelled Custer/Custard/Kuster. Thomas’s parentage, however, cannot be definitively proven.

In 1810 there is a census listing for a J Caster or a T Caster that is just above the listing for Daniel Gordon, who married Catharine’s sister Susannah. It lists a household with two males ages 16 to 25, one male 26 to 44, two females younger than 10, and one female 16 to 26. Because Thomas and Catharine were fairly recently married perhaps they were living with his parents and siblings.

Thomas and Catharine were blessed with four daughters: Nancy Violetta born in 1811, Catharine Lavinia born in 1812, Martha Ann Susanna born in 1814, and Mary born in 1817. Some records indicate that a son was born later in the marriage, possibly in 1833. A male aged 5 to 10 is listed with Thomas and Catharine in the 1840 census, but nothing more has been found about him and perhaps he died young.

In 1826 Thomas signed an agreement with his brothers-in-law to create another school from the one that had been established in Harbaugh’s Valley in 1821 and pay a teacher by subscription per student to educate their children. It might have been at this school that three of the Caster girls met their future husbands, who were their first cousins, all sons of Catharine’s sister Mary Elizabeth (Polly) and her husband Michael Swope. It does seem that the two sisters lived near each other. Nancy Violetta married John W. Swope; Martha Ann Susanna married Ignatius Swope, and Mary married Jacob Swope. Catharine Lavinia married Ezra Munson, the son of Samuel Munson and Elizabeth McDonnell. Ezra Munson was born in Creagerstown in 1811. His older brother Lewis Munson married Elizabeth Swope, one of the daughters of her sister Polly. The Munson family was of English descent and had immigrated into the area from Connecticut, where Edward Munson was one of the first founders of New Haven, and then through New Jersey to western Maryland. All these families stayed in the area, residing in either Frederick County or Washington County.

In 1820 the Casters lived in Election District No. 5 in Frederick County, and in 1830 they lived in Election District No. 10. In 1840 Catharine and Thomas are recorded as living in Cavetown, Maryland, just west of Foxville in Washington County. There is no census record for them in 1850.

The first daughter, Nancy Violetta Swope, lived on Short Hill Trace, a 37-acre farm near Chewsville, Maryland, just west of Cavetown, that her husband had purchased from his parents Michael and Mary Elizabeth Brown Swope, who lived with him in at the time. They are buried in the Bethel United Methodist (originally United Brethren) Church Cemetery in Chewsville.

The second daughter, Catharine Lavinia Munson, raised a family in the southern part of Washington County near Tilghmanton and Bakersville. Her husband Ezra Munson was a shinglemaker and justice of the peace. Their first son, Josephus Washington Munson, was a cooper and broom maker and took frequent trading trips to Illinois. He married Juliann Boyer, the daughter of Samuel Boyer, who ran a fleet of canal boats on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal during the 1850’s and 1860’s. Her second child was a daughter named Catharine, who died at 2 months of age in 1837. Her second and third sons, Calvin Israel Munson and Zephaniah Joshua Markwood Munson, served during the Civil War in the Union Army in Company H, Third Regiment, Maryland Volunteers, from September 1863 to September 1865. Calvin was the oldest survivor in Hagerstown, Maryland, of the Grand Army of the Republic, served as commander of the Reno Post of the G.A.R., and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown with military honors and a gun salute. Zephaniah moved to Blue Springs, Nebraska, in the 1870’s when it was only an Indian trading post. Catharine and Ezra’s daughter Juliann Lucinda, known as Annie, married George W. Barnes, who also served in the infantry during the Civil War in Company D of the 126th and 210th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Thus, Catharine and Ezra must have had considerable concerns during this period with two sons and a son-in-law all serving and while living within a stone’s throw of Sharpsburg, Maryland, and having witnessed the carnage of the Battle of Antietam and then having both sons enlist just two months after the Battle of Gettysburg. Then the son they had at home during this time, William Septimus, died in 1867 at the age of 16 and is buried in the Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Bakersville, Maryland, as are Catherine Lavinia and Ezra.

The third daughter, Martha Ann Susanna, and her husband Ignatius stayed on the mountain and are buried in the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church Cemetery, formerly the Foxville United Brethren Church Cemetery. They had ten children, at least three of whom died in infancy.

The fourth daughter, Mary, and her husband Jacob Swope farmed 26½ acres that in 1892 included a 2½ story log weatherboarded house, barn, and outbuildings with 900 peach trees and 35 apple trees. Of their seven children only two daughters survived to adulthood. Mary and Jacob Swope are buried in Brown’s Cemetery.

Catharine Brown Caster died on March 22, 1851, and Thomas Caster died on September 6, 1853. Both are buried in Brown’s Cemetery, Foxville, Maryland.
