Thomas Brown, Jr.
Thomas Brown, Jr. was born on January 12, 1773, in the Monocacy settlement. Around 1793 or 1794, he married Susannah Rebecca Harman, the daughter of Marcus and Christina (Leatherman) Harman. The Harmans owned land on Catoctin Hollow Road near the present site of the National Parks Service visitor center. On February 3, 1807, he acquired 165 acres known as “Resurvey on Round Meadow and Stands Enough.” This was the property where Hannah had raised the younger children, and it is thought that this is about the time that she may have died and when he was able to obtain the land. Thomas operated a tavern near Harman’s Gap.
All the children of this family were born in Foxville and included Thomas III, b. 1795; Elizabeth, b. 1797; Mary Ann, b. 1798; John, b. 1799; George, b. 1803; Susan, b. 1804; Catherine, b. 1805; Sarah Ann, b. 1812; William H., b. 1813; and Christian, b. 1815. However, this is the only branch of the Brown family that had wanderlust because many of these children migrated west to Ohio around 1835 by oxcart as the lands of the new nation opened for settlement.
Thomas III served in the Maryland militia in the War of 1812. He married Susanna McAfee in 1818 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Maryland. They had two children and about 1836 migrated to Bethel Township, Ohio.
Elizabeth married Daniel Hawver in 1815 and this family also migrated to Carlisle, Bethel Township, Ohio about 1836 possibly with her brother. They had 13 children, and all retained the Hawver, not Hauver, spelling of their surname.
Mary Ann married Christian Gates and they had a farm in Foxville and had four children, several of whom also migrated to Miami County, Ohio.
John died at the age of 12 and is buried in Brown’s Cemetery in the family plot.
George married Julia Ann Scott about 1824 and acquired the Brown homestead in 1830 but around 1835 he packed up the family and headed west to Seneca County, Ohio, where he farmed and was a cooper and justice of the peace.
Susan married John Barnhiser in 1828 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown and had five children while they lived in Washington County, Maryland, and another five after moving also to Seneca County, Ohio, around 1837.
Catherine married Daniel McAfee in 1826, also at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and they went to Miami County, Ohio around 1838.
Sarah Ann married William Martin in Seneca County in 1836 and they later lived in Illinois and Salt Lake City, Utah.
William married first Catherine Brown, the daughter of William and Anna Elizabeth Buhrman Brown, and thus his first cousin. They had four children and after her death he remarried a Sarah (last name unknown) and had another daughter. This family seems to have been the only one that stayed in the area, residing in Greencastle, Pennsylvania.
The last child of Thomas, Jr., and Susanna Rebecca Brown was Christian. He married Susannah Shaull in 1840 in Seneca County, Ohio, and they had three sons.
Thomas Brown Jr. died April 12, 1828. His wife died on June 14, 1831. Both are buried in Brown’s Cemetery.
