Mary Elizabeth Brown
Mary Elizabeth Brown is reported by several researchers to have been born in Frederick County, Maryland, in December 1773. The family referred to her as Polly. She would have been around 17 when her mother Hannah was widowed and moved the children to the cabin in Foxville.
Mary married Michael Swope, Sr., in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Maryland, on October 27, 1797. The record shows as “Michael Schwab and Polly Braun.” He was a year younger than she was, the son of Jacob Bernhard Swope, Sr., and Susannah Steinmetz, who were married in Philadelphia on May 27, 1768. Jacob Bernhard Swope, Sr., was born in Hannover, Germany. According to the U.S. and Canada Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, he arrived in Philadelphia from Germany in 1752 with his parents and siblings. The immigrant thus was Michael’s grandfather Jacob Bernhard Schwab. The Schwabs hailed from the Baden-Wurttemberg area of Germany, as did many in the great German Migration in the mid 1700’s to America and thus the Schwab name was gradually changed to Swope. Michael’s brother Barnhardt Swope fought in the War of 1812 and was present when the English attacked Baltimore. Some of the Swopes later migrated to Ohio.
Michael and Mary Swope had a large family that included Michael Jr., b. 1798; Thomas, b. 1800; John W., b. 1802; Noah, b. 1803; Jacob, b. 1805; Elizabeth (Betsy), b. 1808; Mary (Polly), b. 1809; Ignatius, b. 1812; Catherine, b. 1815; Elijah, b. 1817; and William, b. 1824.
The two oldest sons, Michael and Thomas, were baptized in Apples Church in Thurmont (then Mechanicstown), Maryland, on November 16, 1800 at ages 2 and 6 months, respectively. The parents were listed as Michael Schwab and Elizabeth.
In 1800 the family is listed on the U.S. Census as living in District No. 3 of Frederick County, which comprised the area of Pipe Creek. The household included two males younger than 10, one male 16 to 26, and one female 16 to 26. This tallies because Mary Elizabeth would have been 26 and Michael 25 to 26 depending on the month the census was taken. The children would have been Michael, Jr., and Thomas. The family grouping is listed below a line for a Bernard Swop, who was older and thus probably his father.
In 1810 it shows M. Swope in the Frederick County census and then one male 26 to 44, one female 26 to 44, five males under 10, and two girls under 10.
A school had been established in Harbaugh’s Valley as early as 1821. By 1826 Michael Swope signed an agreement with his brothers-in-law to pay a teacher by subscription per student and open another school in the area to educate their children.
By 1830 the census shows the family in Hauver’s District No. 10 with a household that included 11 people.
Three of the sons---John W., Jacob, and Ignatius---married their first cousins, three daughters of Mary Elizabeth’s younger sister Catharine Dorothea, who married Thomas Caster. John W. married Nancy Violetta, Ignatius married Martha Ann Susanna, and Jacob married Mary. The second son Thomas was a shinglemaker and stovemaker. Ignatius was also a shinglemaker and a wood chopper in the 1860s and a farmer by 1870. Both John W. and Jacob were also farmers.
Jacob and Mary had seven children five of whom died in infancy, with just daughters Catharine Louise and Mary Susan surviving to adulthood. Catharine Louise married her first cousin Jacob, the son of her father’s brother Noah. They had 11 children but also experienced the loss of a 4-year-old son and twin daughters during infancy. Diphtheria and typhoid were often the cause of the loss of young lives. Jacob Swope’s estate listing in the Hagerstown Mail in January 1892 showed that he lived in Cavetown District No. 7 of Washington County, Maryland, on 26½ acres on Warner Gap Road 3 miles east of Smithsburg that was improved with a “comfortable 1½ story log house and back building, all weatherboarded and in good condition, with an elegant small barn, hog pen, corn crib and other outbuildings, and has thereon about 900 peach trees in bearing condition and 35 choice apple trees in bearing condition, and a spring of excellent water, and is convenient to churches and school houses, and in fact a very desirable property.” Jacob and his wife Mary are buried in Brown’s Cemetery.
Noah is listed as a laborer on the 1850 U.S. census, more than likely working on one of the farms; he married Matilda Kendall, and both are buried in Brown’s Cemetery. Elijah married Catherine Penner and was the postmaster of Cavetown from 1849 to 1853.
The first daughter Elizabeth married Lewis Munson, the brother of her cousin Catharine Lavinia Caster’s husband Ezra. Elizabeth and Lewis Munson farmed 155 acres near Garfield supposedly about 2 miles south of the original Swope homestead near Foxville. At some point they migrated to the Sharpsburg area of Washington County near where Ezra and Catharine Munson were living in the 1860s and they are buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Sharpsburg. Several of their daughters after their marriages lived many years in Wolfsville.
Michael and Mary Elizabeth’s second daughter Catherine married Henry Smith; and the youngest daughter Mary married Simon Peter Marken.
In the 1840s Michael and Mary and a younger son in his 20s, probably John, were still engaged in farming their land. In the 1850 U.S. census Michael was 75 and Mary was 76. Michael is still listed as a farmer and they are living alone, but still in Hauver’s District No. 10 in Frederick County. Between 1850 and 1860 they had a 37-acre farm called Short Hill Trace near Chewsville, MD. He sold the farm in 1855 to his son John W. and his wife Nancy Violetta Caster Swope, who lived with or near the elder Swopes at the time. John and Nancy lived all their married life in Chewsville and are buried in the Bethel United Methodist (earlier United Brethren) Church Cemetery there.
In the 1860 U.S. census Mary is listed as age 85 and being “blind,” and Mary Buhrman, age 20, is living with the couple and listed as a servant. The family next on the listing is that of a George and Elizabeth Buhrman and lists daughters Hannah, age 23, and Rebecca, 18, and others, so perhaps Mary Buhrman was a daughter of this neighboring family who was working for the Swopes as household help.
Son Ignatius and his wife Martha Ann Susanna Caster had a son Thomas Ephraim who married Mary Ann Buhrman, the daughter of John and Rebecca (Ridenour) Buhrman. Thomas served in the Union Army in Company F of the 13th Maryland Infantry during the Civil War. He later went to Blue Springs, Nebraska. This is interesting because his cousin on his mother’s side was Zephaniah Joshua Markwood Munson, a son of Catharine Lavinia Caster and Ezra Munson, who also served in the Union Army and went to Blue Springs in the 1870s. It is possible that one family went first and the other followed or that both families went together, but at that time the only settlement there was around an Indian trading post. Thomas’s son Dalva Hamit Swope somehow managed to travel back East for his education at Boston University and became a physician. Dalva’s nephew, Oscar Clinton Patterson, the son of Davit’s sister Jeness, also went to Boston University and got his medical license in 1906. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of major during the First World War and was transported home in 1919 on a troop ship from France with “follicular influenza” (Spanish flu).
Mary Elizabeth Brown died on August 8, 1864, aged 91. Her husband Michael Swope died just 2 months earlier on June 13, 1864, aged 90. They are both buried in Brown’s Cemetery, Foxville, Maryland. Their inscriptions, as those of their son Jacob and his wife Mary, indicate that they were strong in their faith.
