The Thomas and Hannah (Pittinger) Brown Family of Foxville, Maryland

Thomas Brown and Hannah Pittinger met in the Monocacy region of what is now Frederick County, Maryland, around 1770. They had seven children whom Hannah raised mostly on her own in a settlement originally named Brownsville but was later changed to Foxville that now borders the Catoctin Mountain Park. Over the years extensive research has been compiled, and it is hoped that this website will help descendants of this family find out more about their ancestors, most of whom stayed on the mountain or in the adjoining foothills of Frederick and Washington County, Maryland.

The research provided here was originally published in a book in 2021, but because of the large amount of information available and more now coming to light a website seemed more user friendly and accessible to provide and thus share what is known about Thomas and Hannah Brown and each of their children. Their stories are found in the drop-down menus under Stories along with other page links to maps, photos, and additional information.

The descendant listings for each of the seven siblings are at the ends of their stories and can be searched. They are a compilation of family listings researched by descendants Don Wolf and Andree Wilson-Taylor, both no longer living, from typed documents from other descendants that have been circulated, and from this descendant and compiler’s research and that of others from headstones and Ancestry, Find A Grave, and Family Search websites. This family married into families with the names of Gordon, Swope, Caster, McAfee, Buhrman, Harman, Toms, Fox, Hauver, Delauter, Wolf, and others through the years from 1770 to the present…

Everyone has a story, and everyone’s story has value.
